Pharrell Williams worked towards reducing the gap between the Oceans and Fashion. He recently launched his company Bionic Yarn, a brand that makes yarn, fibers and fabrics out of recycled plastic bottles.

Williams’ latest project was to find a solution for plastic waste in our oceans. RAW for the Oceans is a collaborative project to achieve sustainability without scarifying quality. Co-designing the G-Star Raw for the Oceans collection, the idea was to make a serious impact and creating the world’s first durable and refined quality denim made from recycled ocean plastic.

»Climate change is one of the most defining issues of our time. We can each do our part, and recycling ocean plastics is a good way to start.« says Musician, Fashion Designer and Creative Director Williams. According to Bionic’s co-founders Tyson Toussant and Tim Coombs, approximately 700,000 pet plastic bottles are recycled every season. As a commitment to our planet and a boost to new technologies, Williams and Bionic’s co-founders want to turn ocean plastic into smart consumer products.

In this line, Sports brand Adidas has launched a prototype shoe with an upper made from yarns and filaments recycled from ocean waste. British designer Alexander Taylor chose to replace the yarns with fibers made from waste plastic and fishing nets retrieved by Parley for the Oceans during a 110-days expedition tracking an illegal poaching vessel off the coast of West Africa.

»There is no reason why materials with similar characteristics to those that we use every day with conventional production processes cannot be silly replaced by ocean plastic materials« Taylor said in an interview with Dezeen. The initiative tends to repurpose ocean waste and raise awareness of the growing environmental issue.
