And then, my old love for water returned.
Panthalassa contributing photographer Axel Schilling met Karsten in a Vinothek in Hamburg, Germany. Axel remembers: He fell in love with our dog and we got to know each other better. Then, he told me about his life and his fascinating hobby.
Karsten is a retired seafarer living on the south side of Flensburg Fjord in Germany, an inlet of the Baltic Sea. He used to work in the merchant marine service. A few years ago, he found a way to keep his passion for the sea alive: model ship building. After retiring from an active working life, the building of model ships wind- motor or driven by a steam engine- became my hobby. After all, it is about the same themes as in large ships. I'm fascinated by sailing and especially by the coherence and synergy between the technological side of a boat and the wind-water-man aspect. Only someone who dominates all these elements will be a good sailor.
And then, my old love of water returned, concludes Axel.
